Bainbridge Island, WA (May 9, 2016)  College Transition Publishing announced the release of its newest college success publication, Life During Community College: Your Guide to Success.

Life During Community College is a comprehensive guide developed to assist students achieve academic, personal, financial, and career success while attending community college, as well as prepare them for the next phase of their academic and career journey.

Tawnya L. Beermann, Associate Dean of Students & Completion Services at Western Iowa Tech Community College, is the lead author of the guide. Beermann earned her Master of Arts in Educational Psychology & Counseling from the University of South Dakota.  She was an ASPIRE Region TRIO Achiever Award recipient in 2003.  She has nearly two decades of leadership experience in the Student Services arena.

The book is co-authored by Kirrin R. Coleman and Terry J. Arndt.  Coleman, has a Master of Arts in Education from Wake Forest University. She is a National Board Certified teacher who teaches English on Bainbridge Island, WA. She is the coauthor and editor of several publications for College Transition Publishing.  Arndt is the Founder and President of College Transition Publishing.

“As a three-time community college drop-out, I know how important the content of this guide can be for a community college student” said Arndt. With 8 million+ Americans who will seek higher education, 5 million of them will be educated at a community college. Almost 76% of those students are considered high-risk, meaning they have a high likelihood of not completing their college education.  According to Arndt, “Like me, they (incoming college students) are not prepared, nor do these students have the fundamental skills to achieve success. This guide is not the silver bullet, but it’s a great start. This is a tool that MUST be used as part of a comprehensive program.”

The guide was officially released in late March.  Since then, College Transition Publishing has secured four schools that will be implementing the guide on their campus this fall.  The company expects the guide to be utilized on at least 30 campuses this fall.

“We’ve been promoting the book all winter at various higher education conferences, as well as through various informational webinar programs. The response has been phenomenal. Tawnya and Kirrin did an amazing job in helping me put this guide together” said Arndt.

In 2015, President Obama introduced an agenda for community colleges to educate an additional 5 million students with degrees, certificates, or other credentials by 2020. According to Arndt, “Community colleges have a big challenge ahead of them. To achieve this goal they need to increase completion rates. First and foremost, they need to prepare those students for college level study. Life During Community College is the tool they need to do accomplish that.”

College Transition Publishing will be hosting a free informational webinar with Arndt and Beermann. Interested parties can sign-up HERE to receive an invitation to the event once the webinar date/time is released.
